Eastern State Penitentiary

Posted on: October 6, 2010

Our main purpose for our weekend in Philadelphia was to visit the famous Eastern State Penitentiary for a daytime AND haunted night time tour.

The Eastern State Penitentiary is easily one of the most famous buildings in the world. The concept was dreamed up in the house of Ben Franklin and took 30 years to convince the public to make it happen. This particular prison was built to instill penitence in its prisoners to basically scare the shit out of them with torture and labor until they felt remorse for their wrong doings before they finished out their sentences.
We took an audio tour during the day and really got to explore the property which is still very much in tact.

The long corridors.

The horrid living conditions inside the cells.

Along with the ‘nicer’ cells reserved for the special criminals such as Al “scarface” Capone.

The outside structure was equally amusing.

And we were able to get a glimpse of life if we decide to commit a crime 1800’s style.

The night tour was SCARY. They had a special roped off area ready for when it got dark where they did an amazing job scaring the shit out of you as you walked through for 30min. Chris and I led our group of 6 and endured the brunt of the ‘attacks’. Believe me, it’s so scary you have to sign a waiver!

There was even a point in the tour of complete darkness where WE were in charge of providing light with a tiny flashlight. I HIGHLY recommend this tour if you are into that sort of thing.

I’m lucky I got out alive šŸ˜‰

Have you taken a haunted tour before?

I love love scary things like that!!! Sounds like fun.

I have been wanting to go there for years!! Glad you had a scary time!!

Oooh that sounds like something right up my nerdy alley. I tried to convince my husband to do the haunted historic Seattle walk when we were there last and he didn’t want to do it. Slacker.
